Special Items

Unfortunately, WIC and your Local Food Pantry (LFP) can't supply everything you'll need in the way of spices and flavorings. Let's face it - these services barely cover the amount of food one person needs in order to thrive, let alone a family. While we are grateful these services exist to supplement our diets, we always want need more than the programs allow. And that lead me to compile this list of spices and flavorings you may want to create delicious meals.

The items below are ones that can be provided by loved ones. Your meals will be more flavorful, and sometimes even more nutritious.

Bare bones:
salt - aside from salt being a necessary part of your diet (kill to birds with one stone by using iodized salt, see below) it is probably the most important item in your pantry. You can make literally anything taste better with the right amount of salt. You don't even need to add a lot of it to bring out some of the flavors. Use sparingly and add more as needed.

butter - makes everything taste better! Use it as a topping or spread, to fry eggs + veggies, and in baking.

garlic - the health benefits are numerous, plus it adds really great flavor. It's relatively cheap (often less than $2 per bulb), and one bulb will last about 2 weeks kept in a cool, dry place in your cupboard.

Flavors:
vanilla - a luxurious flavoring that rounds out a sweet dish.

Special + Healthy + Additions:
walnuts - an excellent healthy-fat snack and are also great toppers for salads, yogurt, oatmeal, smoothies, wraps... you get the idea!

ginger - wicked good for you!!! Add minced ginger to soups, steep in hot water for a healthy pick-me-up-tea. The health benefits of adding ginger to your diet are numerous!!
